Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a PSW and a health care aide?

They are similar roles with different names by province. Ontario uses personal support worker (PSW), while BC and Alberta use health care assistant or health care aide (HCA).

Do I need to be registered to work as a PSW or HCA?

It depends on the province. In Ontario, registration with the Health and Supportive Care Providers Oversight Authority is voluntary. In BC, publicly funded employers hire HCAs listed on the BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry. In Alberta, health care aides have been regulated by the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta since February 2, 2026.

Can I get caregiver work without a certificate?

Some private home support and companion roles do not require a certificate, but many employers, especially publicly funded ones, ask for a recognized PSW or HCA program. Check each posting.

Is it safe to answer private caregiver ads online?

Be careful. Meet in public first, check references, and never pay a fee to apply or to be matched with a family.
