How to use Indeed in Canada to find hourly, local and remote jobs, with tips on filters, search operators, job alerts and spotting fake postings.

Indeed is a job search engine that many Canadian employers use to advertise everything from warehouse shifts and delivery routes to office and remote customer service work. Its Canadian site is ca.indeed.com. Because so many postings appear there, the key to using it well is narrowing results quickly so you see the right jobs first.

What Indeed is and who it suits

Indeed collects job postings from employers and staffing agencies and lets you search them by keyword and location. It suits almost every job seeker, but it is particularly useful for hourly and entry-level work, where employers often post directly and hire quickly. You can search without an account. Signing in lets you save jobs, create job alerts and keep track of what you applied for.

How to search well

Start with a job title and a city, province or postal code. If you want to work from home, type "remote" in the location field. After your first search, Indeed shows filters that vary by location and search, including:

  • Pay, to focus on postings that list a wage
  • Work setting: remote, hybrid or in-person
  • Job type: full-time, part-time, contract and others
  • Education level, handy if you have no post-secondary diploma
  • Date posted, so you can focus on new listings

Indeed also supports search operators that make a big difference:

  • Put a phrase in quotation marks, such as "forklift operator", to match those exact words.
  • Use OR to catch different names for the same job, such as (cleaner OR custodian OR janitor).
  • Put a minus sign before a word to exclude it, such as driver -uber.
  • Use title: to search job titles only, such as title:"delivery driver".

For licensed jobs, add the licence to your search. Drivers can search "AZ driver" or "Class 1" and security guards can add "licensed".

Set up job alerts

According to Indeed's help centre, you must be signed in to create an alert. Run your search with the filters you want, then enter your email at the bottom of the first page of results and select Activate, or accept the pop-up offering to create the alert. You can choose daily or weekly emails and edit, pause or remove alerts under Settings, then Communications settings. If alerts stop arriving, check your spam folder, and widen your search if there have been no new matches.

How to apply

Some postings let you apply on Indeed with your saved résumé; others send you to the employer's website. Read the whole posting before applying and match your résumé to the duties and requirements listed. Keep a short record of each application. If an employer asks screening questions, answer honestly and mention any licence, certificate or safety training you hold.

Stay safe

Fake job ads appear on every big job site. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns against offers you never applied for, recruiters using web-based email addresses instead of company domains, high pay for very little work, and requests to move money through your own bank account. Its core rule is to never send deposits or pay fees for a job. Check the employer on its official website, do not install unknown apps or software for an interview, and do not share your Social Insurance Number or banking details until you have a genuine written job offer.
