Forklift Driver Jobs: Where to Find Them and How to Apply

Where to find forklift and FLT driver jobs in the UK, how lift truck operator training works under HSE guidance, which sites to search and how to present your training to employers.

Forklift driver jobs, often advertised as FLT driver, counterbalance or reach truck driver roles, are found in warehouses, distribution centres, builders' merchants and factories across the UK. Employers look for operators trained to HSE standards, so it pays to know where to search and how to present your training.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a forklift licence in the UK?

Not in the way there is a driving licence. HSE says employers must make sure lift truck operators are trained to the standards in its Approved Code of Practice, L117. You get a certificate from your training provider, and your employer authorises you to operate trucks at work.

Does my training provider need to be accredited?

HSE says it is not mandatory for training organisations to belong to a voluntary accrediting body, but such schemes help set standards and help employers choose providers. Many employers ask for training from an accredited body, so check adverts for what they want.

What do counterbalance and reach truck mean?

They are common types of lift truck. Adverts usually say which type you will drive, and your training certificate should list the types you are trained on.

Should I pay a recruiter who offers a forklift job if I buy their course?

No. Never pay a fee to apply for a job. If you choose to pay for training, check the provider independently and do not accept promises of a guaranteed job.
