Jobcentre Plus: Free Help to Find Work, Train and Apply
What Jobcentre Plus can do for job seekers in the UK: work coaches, sector-based work academy programmes, CV and interview help, free careers advice and how to find your local office.
Jobcentre Plus is often thought of as the place you go to claim benefits, but it also offers practical, free help to get into work. That includes help with your CV and interviews, access to training and work placements, and links to local employers who are recruiting. Since October 2026, people in England can also get free careers advice through Jobcentres, whether or not they claim benefits.
What Jobcentre Plus offers
According to the government's JobHelp site, Jobcentre Plus can help you prepare for work through training, guidance, work placement programmes, work experience and job trialling schemes. It offers job search help, including advice on your CV and interviews, and computers you can use to apply for jobs. It can also help with starting your own business and with staying and progressing in work.
Many local Jobcentres run social media pages that share local vacancies and "job hours", where employers who are recruiting in your area talk about their roles. In some rural areas, a mobile Jobcentre service visits communities without an office.
Work coaches and SWAPs
If you claim Universal Credit, you will have a work coach. In the first weeks of a claim you usually see them weekly. Your work coach can talk to you about local employers that are recruiting, match you to current vacancies, help with your CV and covering letter, and arrange mock interview practice.
Ask your work coach about sector-based work academy programmes (SWAPs). They are a way to try a sector or industry you have not considered before, working with local employers who need staff. They can be a useful way into a new kind of work if you lack experience in it. What is on offer depends on your area and on local employers, so ask what is running near you.
Free careers advice
In October 2026 the government announced that the National Careers Service has merged into the Department for Work and Pensions and that free careers advice is now available through Jobcentres across England. You do not need to be claiming benefits. You can get support online through the "Get careers information and advice" website (the former National Careers Service site, which keeps the same address), by freephone on 0800 072 0288, or face to face at Jobcentres.
How to use it well
Go prepared. Take a list of the jobs you are interested in, any certificates you hold (driving licence, SIA licence, food hygiene, care training) and the hours you can work. Ask specific questions: which local employers are recruiting for this kind of work, whether a SWAP is coming up, and whether any training could make you a stronger candidate. Combine this help with your own searches on the government's Find a job service.
To find your nearest office, use the local office search on the Contact Jobcentre Plus page. In Northern Ireland, Jobs and Benefits offices handle this support.
Staying safe
Jobcentre Plus services, work coaches and SWAPs are free. Be cautious of anyone who claims to be from a Jobcentre and asks for payment, or who promises a guaranteed job in return for a fee. Never pay a fee to apply for work, and check any contact by calling your local office using details from GOV.UK.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be on benefits to get help from a Jobcentre?
Not for everything. The government announced in October 2026 that free careers advice is available through Jobcentres across England whether or not you claim benefits. A dedicated work coach is mainly for people claiming Universal Credit.
What is a sector-based work academy programme?
Often called a SWAP, it is a programme your work coach can tell you about that helps you try a sector or industry you have not considered before, with local employers who are recruiting.
How do I find my local Jobcentre?
Use the local office search linked from the Contact Jobcentre Plus page on GOV.UK. In Northern Ireland, contact your Jobs and Benefits office instead.
