How to Use Indeed Australia: Smarter Searches, Job Alerts and Applying

How to get more from Indeed in Australia: searching by suburb, postcode or remote, narrowing results, setting up email job alerts and applying without falling for fake ads.

Indeed Australia is a large job search engine that shows ads posted directly by employers alongside listings it collects from other sites. That makes it a good place to see a wide spread of roles in one search, from warehouse and driving work to customer service from home. The flip side is volume: you need good keywords and alerts to stay on top of it. We are an independent guide and are not connected with Indeed.

What Indeed is

Indeed is a free job search site. You type what you want and where, and it returns matching job ads. Some ads let you apply on Indeed itself; others pass you to the employer's or recruiter's website. With a free account you can save jobs, store a resumé, track applications and create job alerts.

Who it suits

Indeed works well if you:

  • want to see many employers at once, including smaller local businesses
  • are searching for hourly, casual or shift work in a particular suburb
  • hold a specific licence or ticket and want ads that mention it
  • are open to remote roles anywhere in Australia

How to search well

Indeed's Australian help article says you can search by job title, keyword or company, and add a city, state, postcode or remote as the location. A few habits make results far more useful:

  • Use the licence or ticket in your keywords. Forklift ads often mention "LF licence", truck ads mention HR or HC, and hospitality ads mention RSA. Searching "forklift LF" or "HC driver" filters out roles you cannot do yet.
  • Add the work pattern. Words like "casual", "night shift", "weekend" or "part time" in the search box narrow things quickly.
  • Try the suburb and the wider city. A search for "Dandenong" and one for "Melbourne VIC" will show different mixes of jobs.
  • Use the filters on the results page to narrow by date posted, job type and distance where they appear.

Read each ad carefully. Requirements such as a police check, a minimum lifting weight or full working rights in Australia are usually listed near the bottom.

Job alerts

Indeed explains that you need to be signed in to create job alerts. Run your search, scroll to the bottom of the first page of results, enter your email address and select Activate. New matching jobs will then be emailed to you. To edit, pause or stop alerts, go to your account settings and open the email section of your communication settings. Create one alert per job type or area so each email stays relevant.

How to apply

  • Keep a simple, up-to-date resumé on your account so you can apply quickly when a good ad appears.
  • Put your licences, tickets and checks near the top: driver licence class, high risk work licence, security licence, NDIS worker screening, RSA, Working with Children Check.
  • If an ad sends you to the employer's site, check the web address belongs to the company before entering your details.
  • Follow up politely after a week if the ad gave a contact name.

Staying safe

Because Indeed brings together ads from many sources, take a moment to check any employer you do not know. Never pay a fee to apply, to receive a uniform or training kit, or to "hold" a position. Scamwatch lists the warning signs: unexpected messages from recruiters on WhatsApp or Telegram, easy money for little effort, and job offers made without any interview. Never give out bank passwords or agree to receive and pass on money for someone else.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an Indeed account to apply?

Many ads let you apply after creating a free account, and you need to be signed in to create job alerts. Some ads send you to the employer's own website to finish the application.

Can I search for remote jobs on Indeed Australia?

Yes. Indeed's help article for Australia says you can type remote in the location field instead of a suburb or city.

How do I stop or change Indeed job alerts?

Go to your account settings, open communication settings and then email, where you can change, pause or turn off job and company alerts.
