LinkedIn Jobs in Australia: Filters, Alerts, Easy Apply and Open to Work
How to use LinkedIn to find jobs in Australia: setting location to remote, filtering by date posted and job type, turning on job alerts, using Easy Apply and the Open to Work setting safely.
LinkedIn is best known as a professional networking site, but its job search is also a useful tool for Australians, particularly for customer service, administration, remote and office-based roles. The advantage is that your profile works for you in the background: recruiters can find you even when you are not actively applying. We are an independent guide and are not connected with LinkedIn.
What LinkedIn Jobs is
LinkedIn Jobs is the job board inside LinkedIn. Employers and recruiters post ads, and you can search, save and apply. Your LinkedIn profile acts as an online resumé, and the Open to Work setting tells recruiters you are looking. A free account covers searching, applying and alerts.
Who it suits
- People looking for work from home, such as customer service, sales support and administration.
- Job seekers with some work history who want recruiters to approach them.
- Career changers, who can use the profile to explain transferable skills.
- Anyone targeting larger employers, which often advertise on LinkedIn as well as their own careers sites.
How to search well
Type a job title in the search box. For remote work, LinkedIn's help centre says to click the Location field and select Remote. Then use the filters at the top of the results. LinkedIn lists filters including:
- Date posted, to see the newest ads first
- Job type, such as full-time, part-time, contract or temporary
- Easy Apply, for jobs you can apply for directly on LinkedIn
- Company, industry and job function
- Under 10 applicants, for jobs that have had fewer than 10 applications so far
Filter labels can change, so if a filter is missing, type the term straight into the search box instead.
Job alerts
Once your filters are set, switch on the job alert toggle on the results page. You can choose to get alerts daily or weekly, by email, app notification or both. Set separate alerts for different job titles, for example "customer service remote" and "customer support Brisbane", so each alert stays focused.
Make your profile work for you
Recruiters search LinkedIn profiles by job title, skills and location, so a few small changes can bring roles to you:
- use a clear headline such as "Customer service officer, Brisbane, open to remote work"
- add your suburb or city so you appear in local searches
- list skills that match the ads you want, for example complaint handling, data entry or CRM systems
- ask a former manager or teacher for a short recommendation
A complete profile also makes Easy Apply applications look stronger, because the employer sees it alongside your resumé.
How to apply
Some ads show an Easy Apply button that sends your profile and resumé from LinkedIn. Others show Apply, which takes you to the employer's website or another job board. Before applying:
- update your headline and "About" section to match the kind of job you want
- list licences, certificates and checks under the relevant sections
- keep your resumé file consistent with your profile
- if you are still employed, consider showing Open to Work to recruiters only
Staying safe
LinkedIn messages are a common route for fake recruiters. Never pay a fee to apply, for training or for equipment, and do not move the conversation to WhatsApp or Telegram just because someone asks. Scamwatch warns about unexpected job offers, high pay for little effort and offers made with no interview. Check that the recruiter works for a real company, and look up the job on that company's official careers page.
Frequently asked questions
Is LinkedIn useful for hourly or casual jobs?
It is strongest for office, customer service, logistics coordination and professional roles, but some employers post warehouse, retail and support roles there too. Use it alongside SEEK, Indeed and Workforce Australia.
Should I turn on Open to Work?
It can help recruiters find you. You can show it publicly or only to recruiters, which is useful if you are still employed.
What is the Under 10 applicants filter?
It shows jobs that currently have fewer than 10 applicants, which can be a good way to find newer ads where your application is more likely to be seen.
